Summer Camps

Camp Joy Olympics from Sean Mathis on Vimeo.

During vacation times parents in Copán, like parents in many places, struggle to find ways to keep their children busy and ways to prevent their children from forgetting the things they learned in school (the Summer Slide). Unfortunately, in low resourced places like Copán there are close to no options for children, which means that children are simply on the streets for most of the day or working. This is why we offer Summer Camps during these times.

In Copán schools can follow two different calendars. The public schools follow the Honduran calendar which lets out in December and starts up in February, and then the private schools follow the American Calendar which lets out in June and resumes in August. Because of this, we run Summer Camps twice a year. During the January vacations we run four Summer Camps: Camp Hope, Camp Ágape, Camp Libertad, and Camp Alabanza. And during the July vacations we run two: Joy and Peace.

Despite the different times, the Summer Camp experience is much the same. Everyday for 4 weeks kids from elementary and Jr. high schools can come and participate in a variety of creative, high-energy activities, that keep them engaged with learning. The children attend classes such as Art, Cooking, Discovery, Bible, and English. They also work together and have a blast playing group games of all types. Summer Camps allow the kids to stay connected to each other in a fun and productive way during their months of vacation.
