Unfriend the Grinch

I used to believe that New Year’s resolutions were foolish. I was convinced that they were counterproductive because instead of holding me accountable, I avoided my resolutions at all costs. You could say, The Grinch was one of my best friends.
After more than a year of working with UPH, I have gained a new perspective. The youth, staff and children at UPH, who against all odds continue to walk together in faith, have changed my approach to New Year’s “resolutions” thanks to their contagious hope.
You see, we might not need “resolutions” after all. I now understand that with so much pain and injustice in the world each new cycle must be faced with courage and every action that moves us in that direction I applaud. The Grinch and I… we don't talk anymore.
Now, I don't know where you stand on resolutions—if you're friends with the Grinch that is okay. And maybe for 2022 your list included the typical stuff: to get into that dreaded gym, be more organized, or finally learn how to speak Spanish. However, I would like to remind you that even if you didn’t mindfully add UPH to that list, you were still with us. During the past year you walked with our kids to camp every day, you were there while the youth prepared their Bible class, and you climbed the mountains of Copán with UrbanTrekkers. You encouraged scholarship holders in their long nights of study, you prayed with us when we learned of the traumatic event that our staff and youth endured in San Pedro Sula, and you even carefully read every email we sent.
As 2023 begins and you start jumping on the treadmill and organizing your closet, just know that because of your ongoing commitment to UPH, we already feel victorious.
Thank you for your faith in us. For sharing your hope through your actions. We know we will succeed because we count on you. We hope you take each victory of ours as your own.
